Here’s everything you need to know about beauty and wellness supplements and the best options for glowing skin, healthy hair and nails.
Where to start with beauty supplements?
To start taking beauty or wellness supplements and get results is important to get into place healthy lifestyle habits. — From drinking water to move your body and eat your greens— Then multivitamins and probiotics are some of the best points to start with.
“Gut health is everything, and not only will probiotics limit the absorption of undesirable compounds from your bowel, but they also enhance nutrient availability and, therefore, absorption. They also work to reduce the reabsorption of eliminated toxins from your liver, as well as supporting other detoxification processes,” Says Amie Skilton – Naturopath, Herbalist, Nutritionist.
Also, Skilton added that the next tier of beauty supplements would be skin-specific micronutrients such as vitamin C, zinc, collagen and omega-3 fatty acids. These micronutrients support collagen and elastin production as well as retard their destruction, in addition to supporting overall healing and radiance.
Once you have the fundamentals taken care of, you can consider including something to address any specific concerns you may have, such as Lactoferrin that works brilliantly to clear breakouts.
Do beauty supplements actually work?
What we ingest in our body can have a positive or negative effect, from how our complexion looks to have a healthy gut that will affect our skin look.
“You want to be sure the supplement you’re choosing contains a therapeutic dose of the ingredient you’re looking to benefit from. Vitamin C is crucial for collagen, but it’s also used in the body for various other functions – which means if you’re taking a suboptimal dose, you’re unlikely to see the skin benefits,” Says Skilton.
Also, something to keep in mind is that if you use a supplement that only has a small amount in it, it’s unlikely you’ll see a difference.
“Equally as important is to ensure the compounds you’re taking are in their most active and bioavailable form. For instance, collagen is a great skin-supporting compound, but results are really only attributed to supplements that have been hydrolysed to a particular molecular weight. Zinc is another skin critical nutrient, but intestinal bioavailability can limit how much you can absorb; opting for glycinate or gluconate forms will produce much better results than the oxide form, for instance. All in all, yes, beauty supplements do work – it’s simply a matter of choosing a good quality product and taking a therapeutic dose.” Says Skilton.
