How fast does the world seem to move these days? The answer for most people is too fast! How are the days and weeks and month and, yes, even years flashing by at lightning speed? It’s disconcerting, to say the least, and it can be upsetting to some people who feel they’re just not getting enough done in life.

Of course, there are no rules about what you need to have done by a certain time, but with the pressures of society all around, and perhaps especially on social media, it definitely feels as though there are, and falling behind feels awful.

That’s why the idea of slowing down might not be the first thing that comes to mind when you want a solution – isn’t that just the opposite of what you want to do? The truth is, it’s not – it can help. When you practice slow living, you can be a lot more intentional about your life and savor the little moments rather than getting caught up in the current and being pushed along, which really only means you miss out on things. With that in mind, here are some tips on how to live more slowly.

Mindful Eating

We all have to eat, so why not start there when it comes to being slower and enjoying life more? Instead of rushing through every meal because there’s always something else to do, take the time to really taste each bite – it will make a big difference to your enjoyment and your health.

The key is to turn off any distractions, so don’t eat while you’re watching TV, using your phone, or working, for example. It’s far better to focus on the food so you can taste every flavor, feel the textures, and smell the delicious aromas. As a bonus, when you’re eating more mindfully, your digestion will be better and you won’t run the risk of overeating, so you can have better control over your weight.

Invest In Quality Over Quantity

If you want to live more slowly and deliberately so you can really enjoy all the little things in life, you won’t want to have so many material possessions around you – living slowly is more about having experiences than collecting things that just end up cluttering your home and causing you stress and anxiety.

That’s why, whenever you want to buy something, take a step back and then ask yourself whether you really need whatever it is you’re buying, and if you do, you can then set about exploring the best quality version of it. Perhaps you need a new mattress, so you can research what is pocket spring mattress and how much you should be spending to ensure you get the best quality you can afford – it will pay off in the long run, and that’s true of any purchase you make.

Disconnect

Everything and everyone seems to be connected in this day and age, what with social media and smartphones being used so much, and although there are definitely some good things about that, it can also get a bit much sometimes, and you might find yourself speeding up to catch up with other people – many of whom you don’t actually know, and who might not be telling the whole truth on their profiles anyway.
When you feel that start to happen, disconnect and stop feeling so much pressure to be available 24/7, and it will really help – you’ll feel calmer, less stressed, and you’ll be doing things for yourself rather than showing off on social media, which can be tiring and inauthentic.
