When there is a crisis, we all know that the worst thing we can do is to panic even though sometimes could be hard to not do it, especially when the news headlines are reporting the coronavirus as a global health pandemic, there is not enough stock on the supermarkets, people are in quarantine, and schools, offices and entire cities are on extreme lockdown.
After all of that, how can we stay calm?
Who to trust?
There is so much information about COVID-19 and we don’t know who to trust or not. The best source of information to trust in Australia is The Australian Government Department of Health and the World Health Organization (WHO).
What is Covid-19?
COVID-19 is a type of coronavirus (a family of viruses) that cause illness in humans such as respiratory infections with symptoms like coughing, fever and difficulty breathing, symptoms are shown from two to fourteen days after exposure.
How does it spread?
COVID-19 spreads from person to person through close contact or droplets when they cough, sneeze or talk. The problem is that these droplets can travel through the air and be transmitted by other people, therefore, infecting them. However, the droplets can’t travel longer than 1 metre in the air.
It may be possible that a person can get COVID-19 by touching a surface or object that has the virus on it and then touching their own mouth, nose, or possibly their eyes, but this does not seem to be the main way the virus spreads.
What to do if I feel ill?
If you are feeling sick, you should stay at home and isolate yourself. If you are living with another person, hygiene has to be crucial, disinfecting surfaces regularly and not sharing items. Call ahead of time to book an appointment with your doctor. Tell symptoms, travel history and any recent close contact with someone who has the COVID-19.
If you must leave home to see your doctor, wear a surgical mask (if you have one) to protect others.
How to protect yourself?
Wash your hands frequently before and after eating, and after going to the toilet, cover your cough and sneeze and use alcohol-based hand sanitiser. Disinfect items you touch often, such as your phone or laptop, with disinfectants.
Should I wear a mask?
Wearing a surgical mask is only helpful in preventing people who have COVID-19 from spreading it to others. If you are well, you do not need to wear a surgical mask as there is little evidence supporting the widespread use of surgical masks in healthy people to prevent transmission in public.
How to nourish my body to stay healthy?
Feast on veggies: We need vitamins and plants substances if we want to have a strong immune system and the best way to do it is consuming hearty, fresh veggies, such as cabbage, broccoli, or Brussels sprouts as they are super rich in vitamin C among another bunch of good things.
Drink warm teas: Teas are a real booster on cold days as they warm up the body from the inside out and providing it with the perfect hydration state so keep drinking those turmeric, ginger, fennel and cinnamon teas through the day to strengthen your body immune defences.
Boost your gut health: Between 70% of our immune responses take place from the gut so it’s a good reason to pay attention. If you want to know how to have a happy gut check here.
