There are more hair loss reasons than you might think – Did you know that it is normal to lose up to 100 hairs per day? provided they are growing back – The reason? It can be from hormones, genetics, stress and the list goes on…

Hair loss does fluctuate says Lisa Caddy, Consultant Trichologist, Brand Ambassador and Education Manager for Philip Kingsley “It is normal for you to notice extra hair fall on some days and less on others. You may also find that your hair comes out more during certain times of the year. For instance, many people notice extra hair fall in the Autumn season”

HAIR LOSS CAUSES

There are many possible causes for a sudden increase in hair loss. Hair is very sensitive to whatever is going on internally – such as fluctuations to general health and hormone levels, as well as nutritional factors. This is because hair is a non-essential tissue, and so your body treats it as dispensable. It’s important to realize that hair shedding occurs 6-12 weeks after the event that caused it – so if you are losing more hair than usual, it is not a reflection of what occurred a day or a week ago. Look back a few months for possible triggers.

Lisa Caddy says that the most common hair loss reasons are:

  • Lack of dietary protein: Hair is made of protein, and so when you are not eating adequate amounts of protein, your hair does not have the necessary building blocks it requires to grow.
  • Lack of complex carbohydrates: Hair cells are the second fastest-growing cells your body makes. Without enough carbs (which provide energy), your hair does not receive the fuel it needs to grow.
  • Consistently skipping meals: This also deprives the hair of the energy and nutrients it needs to grow.
  • Ferritin (stored iron) deficiency: This is one of the most common hair loss reasons we see in our Clinics in New York and London. Ferritin is used by your body to produce the protein hair is made of.
  • Vitamin D deficiency: Vitamin D deficiency can have a major impact on hair growth as every follicle contains a Vitamin D receptor hormone.
  • Vitamin B12 deficiency
  • Hypothyroid
  • Stress: A pretty common state these days, and definitely one of those hair loss reasons to keep in mind.
  • Surgery, especially under general anesthesia.
  • A high fever, or stomach flu.

And – Anything that affects oestrogen (female hormone) levels. i.e.

  • Pregnancy (Post-Partum Hair Loss): Another of these hair loss reasons that we might not be aware, but actually it occurs in around 50% of women approximately three months after giving birth or stopping to breastfeed. During pregnancy, when oestrogen levels rise, more hairs than usual are kept in their anagen (growth) phase. When oestrogen levels fall and return to normal after giving birth, the hairs retained during pregnancy can be shed.
  • Menopause
  • Stopping or starting an oral contraceptive pill

HOW TO PREVENT HAIR LOSS

Your hair is influenced largely by your general health, stress levels, scalp health, and diet. Generally, the better you look after yourself, and your scalp, the less likely it is that you will experience excessive hair shedding says, Lisa Caddy.

  • Eat a balanced diet: A varied and nutritious diet sustains hair growth from a dietary standpoint. For added support, take a daily protein and Iron supplement. In the autumn and winter seasons, you should definitely take a daily Vitamin D3 supplement, as Vitamin D levels fall in the colder months – and this can impact your hair loss. Lisa loves their Philip Kingsley Root Complex supplement, which also contains Omega 3s, Marine Collagen, Selenium, and Coenzyme Q10.
  • Help manage your stress levels: With weekly sessions of yoga, Pilates, mindfulness or meditation – whatever relaxes you, really.
  • Get yearly medicals and blood tests: Stay on top of your general health.
  • Give your scalp similar TLC to the skin on your face: After all, your scalp is simply an extension of the skin on your forehead – and hair grows its best when your scalp is clean and healthy. Shampoo regularly and use a weekly scalp mask.
