There’s no need to say that 2020 has been the year of beauty treatments at-home; with most of us WFH and with beauty salons closed for a few months, brands have been thinking about different ways to make us benefit from the professional techniques and treatments with our PJs on at the comfort of our homes. And let me tell you something, I can’t be happier with this mindset change.
So getting into the nitty-gritty of today’s topic, I can certainly say that derma rollers have been one of the best discoveries my skin has encountered in the last year. Obviously, as a beauty editor, I would try any beauty tool that lands on my desk for my skin’s sake.

What is dermarolling?
We could easily say that the science behind derma rolling lies down to a form of collagen induction therapy, and basically, derma rolling is a form of microneedling. The process involves rolling a small wheel with hundreds of tiny needles over the face to gently prick the skin. But don’t worry, it won’t hurt you. It just works by resurfacing the top layer of the skin by encouraging your skin’s natural healing process.
The result? Fewer fine lines and wrinkles, firmer skin, and a more even tone and texture. (To my surprise, microneedling can even be used to treat stretch marks and acne scars and also has the added benefit of increasing the penetration and efficacy of any products you use afterwards, in particular our beloved face serums.)
Benefits of dermarolling:
- Stimulates collagen
- Fades scars
- Minimizes fine lines
- Plumps skin
- Strengthens skin barrier
Who should be using a Derma roller at home?
As derma rolling has a wide variety of benefits, it can be used for almost every type of skin, but the highest turnaround would roll into those with acne scars.
As a real acne scarring sufferer, every time I go out for a skin treatment beauty experts tells me that introducing a derma roller in my skincare routine will easily help me get a clear complexion with consistency.
I chatted a few times about this topic with Nicola Kropach, Aesthetics Rx expert, and this time she has given us some of her top-notch advice in regards to dermarolling:
1. What is the purpose of dermarolling?
At home, derma rollers help to improve the absorption of your skincare. The 0.25mm needles are designed to create micro-channels in the very surface of the skin for enhanced product absorption. The stratum corneum with cohesive skin cells on the surface of the skin, combined with the skin’s natural hydrolipidic film form the protective barrier on the skin that practices part of the body’s first line of defense against pathogens and unwanted substances entering the body.
2. What targeted skin concerns will benefit from derma rolling?
It is a multi-tasking treatment that can assist with many skin concerns such as pore refinement, brightening, hydrating, and minimizing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Pairing the treatment with corrective serums will enhance your results.
3. Are there any rules when it comes to derma rolling?
It is extremely important to keep your derma roller scrupulously clean. Be sure to always rinse with warm water post-use, allow to dry, and then spray with an Isopropyl Alcohol sanitizer before placing the device back in the hygiene container to be stored until next use. Follow the guide on how to section the face and do not use pressure, the needles are painless and will do their job without force.
4. When is the best time to apply my serum?
If your skin is easily irritated we recommend applying Aesthetics Rx B Serum prior to using the derma roller, otherwise after you have derma-rolled apply your favourite Aesthetics Rx serum to assist with treating your skin concerns.
What products should I use after derma rolling?
The first time you perform it, your skin will likely feel more sensitive than usual, but don’t worry that’s completely normal, just try to follow your beauty routine using products that contain: Vitamin C, Niacinamide, or Hyaluronic Acid (HA) for uplevel even more your skin’s results and get that glowing and clear complexion we all are dreaming about.
Is there anything to know after trying derma rolling at home?
- Avoid using anything too harsh such as Acids or Benzoyl Peroxide.
- A pink skin and the sensation like a mild sunburn is normal and can last for 24 hours.
- Micro needling is best performed 2-3 times per week in the evening.
