There is no doubt that anti-wrinkle injections and dermal fillers are very popular in Australia, as they can be a brilliant temporary solution for improving the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. While filler can last up to 18 months, anti-wrinkle injections tend to wear off after 3-5 months, however, some lifestyle and skincare practices may help to maintain results a little bit longer. We asked Dr. Stephen Crimston, Australia’s leading cosmetic doctor and Medical Director of the All Saints Clinic, for his top tips on making your anti-wrinkle injections last longer.

Follow post-treatment instructions

Once you get your treatment done, your doctor or nurse will likely give you some instructions. They may be around avoiding exercise or sweating for 24 hours, avoiding active ingredients in skincare for a few days, or sleeping on your back as opposed to your side or stomach for 24 hours. Following the tips you are given can improve your results and may even make them last longer.

Protect your skin from the sun

Dr. Stephen Crimston recommends to everyone that they should be mindful of their sun exposure, both for health reasons as much as ageing ones. However, it is good to note that sun exposure can break down the substances in anti-wrinkle injections more quickly. By using sunscreen with a high SPF to protect your skin from harmful UV rays, and wearing a hat and sunnies, you will be helping to protect yourself and your skin from the damage that it can do

Stay Hydrated

This one is a no-brainer, but drinking an adequate amount of water will help to keep your skin hydrated, which can contribute to a healthier and more youthful appearance. Well-hydrated skin may enhance the effects of anti-wrinkle injections too

Maintain a healthy lifestyle

Good overall health can positively impact the longevity of results. This includes regular exercise, a balanced diet that is rich in vitamins and antioxidants, as well as getting sufficient sleep.

Avoid smoking

Smoking can accelerate the ageing process and diminish the effects of anti-wrinkle injections. If possible, try to quit smoking.

Use high-quality skincare products

A proper skincare routine can complement the effects of anti-wrinkle injections. Using products that are suitable for your skin type, that are rich in vitamins and that address your specific concerns is a good way to keep your results going for longer.

Consider touch-up treatments

Depending on the treatment that you are getting, you may be able to schedule touch-up treatments before the effects wear off completely. However, discuss this with your healthcare professional in advance.

Manage your stress

Chronic stress can contribute to premature ageing. Incorporating stress management techniques into your week such as meditation, yoga, deep breathing, exercise and more sleep can promote overall wellbeing

Limit your facial expressions

While we all love to use facial expressions, excessive facial movements such as frowning or squinting can contribute to the formation of wrinkles. If you can minimise unnecessary muscle activity in your face, then it is best to do so.

Consult your healthcare professional

There is no doubt that celebrities and trends can play a role in the treatments that we learn about and therefore consider getting. The thing is that what works for one person, may not be the best option for you. Consult your healthcare professional to discuss your concerns and from there you can choose the best option and route for you

It is important to note that the duration of any cosmetic beauty treatment will vary from person to person. Individual results can depend on a person’s lifestyle, metabolism or even the type of treatment or injection used.
