If you’re into skincare, chances are you’re into Dr. Barbara Sturm skincare products.  Her revolutionary facial treatments and skincare formulas are beloved by actresses, models and celebrities worldwide.

Dr. Sturm began her career as an orthopedic surgeon and was a key member in creating the medical treatment known as -Kobe Procedure- which uses anti-inflammatory proteins found in the blood cells that reduce inflammation and promote healing.

The skincare guru brought the same anti-inflammatory protein method into aesthetics by creating the famous Vampire Facial from there, she jumped into skincare In 2014 and launched her cosmetic brand that you can now find at MECCA.

Dr. Sturm’s skincare routines are simple, but her range is packed with complex formulas. She created the famous ‘blood cream’, and her Hyaluronic Serum is a must for everyone’s beauty bag — Including her own —We have interviewed Dr. Barbara Sturm exclusively to find out about her story, her beauty routine and much more!

What inspired you to launch Dr. Barbara Sturm?

As a doctor and scientist, I always aimed for new cutting-edge techniques and treatments and I was always fascinated by aesthetics and the combination of art and science that’s involved in the process, as well as the immediate and very gratifying results for patients.

I started injecting Hyaluronic Acid and Botox, (I translated the science from my career in orthopedics into the skin) and I then created the blood facial in 2002 based on work with body owned proteins from my patient’s blood. Then I invented my first cream, called MC1, for my patients out of their own blood plasma. They then asked me to create an entire skincare regimen and my anti-inflammatory line, Molecular Cosmetics was born. It’s inspired by my work and the demand for an effective yet healing skincare line that didn’t exist yet on the market.

What is your favourite product that everyone needs to try and why?

My products are like my children – I can’t choose a favourite – but if I had to it would be my Super Anti-Aging Face Cream. It’s my ultimate one-stop-shop if I’m on the go and provides hydration, protection and anti-aging properties based on advanced ingredient science and years of formulation development.

What are your thoughts about exfoliation?

As we age, skin naturally slows down its cell turnover, causing a build-up of dead skin cells on the surface that gives skin a dull appearance and uneven texture. Regular exfoliation aids the removal of dead skin cells and bacteria which helps smooth uneven skin texture, unblock, and tighten pores, fade acne scarring and brighten the overall appearance of the skin.

It also helps any products you apply onto the skin to absorb and work more effectively. I recommend using an enzymatic exfoliator like my Enzyme Cleanser to gently slough away dead skin without disrupting live skin cells or a gentle mechanical exfoliant like my Facial Scrub. I always advise staying away from chemical or acid exfoliants that tend to harm healthy skin and disturb skin barrier function.

What is the best way to soothe the skin and promote healing?

My philosophy is that every skincare routine, regardless of age or gender should combat inflammation, deeply hydrate and nurture the skin and be packed with highly active anti-aging properties without the use of aggressive ingredients.

All of my products are for sensitive skin, no exception but to specifically calm irritation and help to rebalance the skin I invented my Calming Serum. It quells irritation using a plant-based complex of Cardiospermum; a vine studied for its anti-irritation properties, Echium; a flowering plant that helps soothe skin with a unique blend of fatty acids, and Sunflower Seed Oil that can help protect sensitive cell membranes against free radical attack. It’s amazing at soothing mosquito bites and a wonderful skin soother after shaving, sun exposure, inadequate sleep, and exposure to air conditioning or environmental pollution. When used over time, it also helps to strengthen the skin and promote a healthy skin matrix.

Most common skincare mistakes you can’t deal with?

There are two that I see most often; zig and zagging in-between products and brands, self-curating your skincare, which can cause the ingredients to work at cross purposes. Secondly, using quick fix anti-aging approaches like acid peels and harsh lasers that create inflammation and harm rather than heal your skin. The goal with skincare is to soothe and reduce inflammation, not cause it – skincare should never cause any discomfort.

Now that borders are open, any travel skincare advice?

Travel presents unique skin inflammation triggers, with sleep deprivation, stress, changing climates, bacteria, and dry, cold air on the plane. Extra hydration is my focus to dealing with the dryness of travel. My Face Mask after landing is essential. I use my Anti-Pollution Drops and my Hyaluronic Serum before, during and after the flight, and seal with my Face Cream to avoid transepidermal water loss. I always travel with my Hydrating Face Mist and my supplements –– diet and lifestyle are hard to keep controlled when travelling which is when the supplements are super important.

Can you share with us your daily skincare routine?

Twice a week, I’ll either use the Facial Scrub or Enzyme Cleanser in the shower on my face and body to remove dead skin cells, boost circulation and encourage skin renewal.

I apply my Hyaluronic Serum immediately after the shower, and I’ll then apply my Super Anti-Aging Face Cream and, when I have dark circles or puffiness, my Super Anti-Aging Eye Cream. For Zoom calls and IG Lives, I use Glow Drops instead of makeup.

At least twice a week, I use my Face Mask. At night, cleansing the skin before bed is essential, to remove pollution, pathogens, oil, makeup, and other impurities from the skin before sleep. Cleansing also prepares the skin to receive active ingredients that assist the body’s night-time reparative processes. My Night Serum boosts this renewal process with active ingredients that counteract dryness and stressed skin and aid the skin’s own protection against UV-induced damage.
