As the northern hemisphere moves into autumn, British tennis sensation Emma Raducanu is celebrating its colours by lightening her naturally much darker brunette into caramel. While she’s been a smash on the court since her stunning 2021 US Open win – The first qualifier (male or female) to win a Grand Slam since the Open era began – she’s been serving aces in the style arena for even longer. UK Vogue ran a shoot on her the month prior to her victory in New York – a big call that paid dividends – and a mere month after that triumph, she’d been snapped up as an ambassador by French fashion legend Dior.

As we come to the conclusion of this year’s Grand Slam season, Emma will be hoping her highlights on court outshine those in her hair at the US Open. She’s been knocked out at the second round stage of the Australian Open, Wimbledon and the French Open this year.
While she won’t have to play the qualifiers for the US Open (as the current champion), she’s lost 18 of her 31 matches since lifting the Championship last year. She’s also got a very tough first-round draw against Alizé Cornet, who’s outperformed Raducanu in every Grand Slam so far this season. While she isn’t expected to retain her crown – the current Coral tennis odds have Iga Świątek and Caroline Garcia as favourites – she’ll be looking for a good showing to get her WTA Top 10 ranking back; she’s currently 11th. Playing for pride is essential in modern tennis. Raducanu’s endorsements with Dior, Tiffany, Nike, British Airways and Evian have seen her net worth be estimated at US$20m (AU$29m) before she’s reached her 20th birthday.
Emma Raducanu New Look
So how do you make your hair look like Emma Raducanu new hair colour? The simplest way to lighten really dark hair is to bleach it and then re-colour, but Emma didn’t go for that – Instead favouring a fairly complex process of blonde highlights and glazing to create ‘glowlights’. Top colourist John Clark advises requesting a “full head of highlights, lowlights and tip-outs followed by a glaze to create the same sort of effect”.
For an easy explanation, Kate Moss and Emilia Clarke have sported similar hair colours recently, and their socials should be a goldmine of useful pics. Maintenance-wise, the look needs a delicate touch. Consider adding to the routine blue shampoo, which are great for brunettes, and purple shampoo for bottle blondes – They smooth out brassy tones and keep lightened brown hair from developing that orange hue – Doubly important in the southern hemisphere now as the sun starts peering out to do a number on your colour. We love Olaplex no.6 and their no.9 serum would be a good investment in keeping the highlights shiny without dulling the darker tones in the hair left natural.
There might not be so much Australian interest in the US Open this year. With Ash Barty and Sam Stosur both retiring, it’d be a big shock to see an Aussie lift the trophy, although Ajla Tomljanovic, Daria Saville and Jaimee Fourlis have all booked their first-round slots. If you’re looking for a new look while cheering them on, though, keep an eye on Emma Raducanu.
