As a hardcore skincare junkie in both my personal and professional life, when a new ingredient, formula or device is released alongside phrases like ‘non-surgical facelift’ and ‘the only product you’ll ever need’, I tend to proceed with a healthy amount of scepticism. At the end of the day, no amount of retinol, vitamin C or gua sha can rival the effects of surgery or in-clinic treatments. There is also something so frustratingly humbling about buying into the hype surrounding a product only to purchase it and experience average results.
There is; however, one technological trend I’ve come across that really can deliver transformational results from home – Electrical Muscle Stimulation (EMS). As luck would have it, FaceGym – a brand made famous by its intense facial workouts and celebrity clientele – has just launched its very own EMS device, The FACEGYM PRO. It is exclusively available at Mecca and currently retails for $1,121.00. Read on to find out why I think it’s worth it.
What is EMS and why is it useful?
Bare with me, we’re about to get scientific. Electrical Muscle Stimulation refers to the action of transmitting electrical impulses through the skin to trigger muscle contractions and the production of adenosine triphosphate (ATP).
As EMS causes muscles in a chosen area to contract and relax rapidly, regular sessions can improve strength and tone considerably. EMS can also be used as desired to relieve tension or create a temporary lift.
ATP is a naturally occurring molecule that is essential to healthy cell function. The energy it provides helps cells to regulate turnover, repair damage and produce collagen and elastin. Maintaining higher ATP levels ensures that the skin is equipped to heal wounds, reduce scarring and maintain elasticity and fullness.
How is the FACEGYM Pro different to other facial devices?
Most lifting and sculpting devices work by emitting a microcurrent with a frequency between 1-8 Hz. Currents in this range are unable to penetrate beyond the epidermis. Due to this, microcurrent devices can be used to maintain the skin and create an impressive temporary look, but cannot create lasting results or firm weakened muscles and skin.
The FACEGYM Pro uses patented Triple Wave Technology to emit a current with a customisable frequency between 1300-1700 Hz. The first wave has an anaesthetic tightening effect, the middle wave promotes ATP production within the dermis and the last wave penetrates right down to the muscle to strengthen and firm. In keeping with FaceGym’s fitness-inspired approach to skincare, the current emitted by the FACEGYM Pro is delivered in randomised pulses that prevent muscles from anticipating a pattern and relaxing. Due to this, the FACEGYM Pro offers greater results with greater potential longevity.
My experience using the FACEGYM Pro
The pros:
- Cheaper than a facelift
- More cost-effective than ongoing botox or laser treatments
- No downtime
- (99%) painless
- Fast to use
- Can reach the muscle layer and create dramatic results
- Can provide longer lasting results than other devices
The Cons:
- Still expensive
- The ongoing cost of FaceGym conductor serum
- The brushed matte handle is hard to keep clean
- Consistent use is required to maintain results
FACEGYM Pro Review
As recommended, I began by applying five pipettes of the included Collagen Infusion Serum and set the device to its lowest frequency. Though I didn’t feel much, the muscles surrounding the device’s teardrop shaped wand heads twitched slightly with each pass. After receiving quite a strong zap on a patch of serum free skin, I understood why so much is recommended. I do think you can get away with using less by working in smaller sections though, as the device emits a beep when it is time to apply more serum and move on. After each session, I found that the lifted effect lasted roughly 4 hours.
From the second day onward, I used each 10 minute session to work my way up to the highest level. Despite researching EMS and reading countless reviews for the FACEGYM Pro, I was genuinely surprised by how dramatic my results were and just how strange the device feels on its higher settings. The gliding motion of the device’s current made the muscles under my cheekbones feel like they were being plucked like guitar strings and as I held the device over my brows to lift them, I couldn’t stop my eyelids from blinking. It wasn’t painful or even unpleasant, just really, really odd.
By the end of my last session, my cheekbones were sharper, my jawline was more pronounced and I looked mildly surprised due to my eyebrows being so lifted.
Is the FACEGYM Pro worth it?
Yes, but there’s a catch.
I am very impressed by the technology behind the FACEGYM Pro and believe in its potential as a viable alternative to surgical and in-clinic anti-ageing treatments. It is backed by considerable research that indicates the FACEGYM Pro’s technology is far more effective than that used in most other devices. I would particularly recommend the FACEGYM Pro to individuals put off by the upfront cost, pain and downtime of more intense treatments.
That being said, there are a few tiny drawbacks to the device. Strengthening the facial muscles and tightening the skin enough to delay the more apparent signs of aging requires a near daily commitment and even though ten minutes really isn’t that long, I can imagine it might become tedious. Similarly, though the device has been designed to be a constant part of your routine for years to come, the brushed matte plastic handle attracts marks and is fairly difficult to keep clean.
So to put it simply, if you are someone seeking to lift, sculpt, tighten and firm your face for a temporary lift every now and again, or you are dedicated to achieving lasting results through regular use, then yes, FACEGYM Pro is absolutely worth every cent.
