As the new year rolls around people are setting resolutions and goals but most ‘fail’ before the first month of the year is over. Why? Firstly, their goals aren’t aligned with their values. Secondly, their action plan isn’t aligned with their goals, Drew says.
For goal setting to work, you first need to identify your value hierarchy – the things in life that are most important to you. Your values are your compass. They are there to guide you and assist with decision making. You can rely on your value hierarchy system to test if something is a negative or positive thing in your life. If you find yourself lost or on the wrong path, you can use your values to course-correct and get back on track. Sometimes, we set our working out expectations a lot higher than they need to be, setting ourselves up for failure.
In my opinion, working out should be enjoyable. The thought of signing up for a boot camp to have a biggest-loser-style trainer yelling in your face in an attempt to instil fear, pain, and suffering just doesn’t seem very effective (unless of course, you enjoy that kind of stuff, then by all means, go for it!).
As somebody living with type 1 diabetes, my favourite way to improve my diabetes management is by doing a workout at 12RND fitness. It’s a full-body workout with a focus on boxing. The structure of the workout mimics a 12-round championship boxing title fight i.e 12x 3-min rounds with 30 seconds rest between rounds. The full-body nature of the workout means I can burn a lot of muscle glycogen, open numerous glucose gateways, and improve insulin sensitivity across all the muscles of my body.
And at the end of the day, you can still end up at home watching Netflix with a delicious, healthy home-cooked meal but just imagine how much better it will taste knowing that you well and truly earned it!
Discover your ‘why’. Make it personal. Don’t ever forget it.
On the other side, Casey Burgess says that setting goals is the gateway to getting sh*t done …( apparently ) …. Yet I find that my personality tends to want to go the other way, by being stubborn and doing everything it can to do the opposite!
I think I have learned over the years, to make small, short term goals, and achieving them before getting over ambitious and reaching for the stars, all before Jan 15…. Totally not going to happen haha.
So at the end of 2019 she started training at 12RND boxing gym at Bondi Junction and told herself 3 times a week she would go …. Next thing she knew she was part of a 6-week challenge, hitting the pads over 5 times a week! What she figured out, is that she personally had to find something she enjoyed and LOVED doing to keep herself in checking and ticking those goal boxes for herself! She got stronger, fitter and had more mental clarity as she rolled into the year not feeling the same. It also helped that they made her eellike a mate and as she said she always had SO much fun.
I have decided to listen to my body, and mix it up with pilates, walking, some mornings off just to stretch, and now changing my morning 12RND workouts for the afternoon session, and also bringing along a friend to help me get through those rounds!
