Between the popularity of ‘clean girl’ makeup, ‘clean’ ingredients and the habitual carrying around of actual cleaning products like hand sanitiser, it’s safe to say that in our semi-post-covid world, the desire to eat, look and live ‘clean’ is more relevant than ever. Perfectly capturing the collective pursuit for cleanliness is Maison Margiela Bubble Bath, a light EDT that elevates the humble soap sud to elegant new heights.
Maison Margiela Bubble Bath Review
Launched in 2012 as an homage to Margiela’s ‘Replica’ collection of reproduced archival pieces from around the world, Replica fragrances evoke and preserve the memories of special times, places and sensations. Each nostalgic scent is packaged in an apothecary-style bottle and label printed with details about the notes within. While Bubble Bath’s direct inspiration came from a luxurious soak in a Beverly Hills Hotel bathtub in 2005, in my opinion, the allure of a bubble bath and its subtle, soapy scent is timeless, ageless and free from any one location, so is perfect for the clean-obsessed here and now.
Now onto the notes…
In a departure from the usual linear scent profile of most Replica fragrances, Bubble Bath is a unisex eau de toilette formulated with a traditional pyramid of top, heart and base notes that shift throughout the day to showcase each layer. The fragrance opens with a citrusy, aldehydic and slightly green soap bubble accord alongside crisp pink pepper and bergamot. As this fades, the smell of freshly laundered towels is evoked with lavender flower essence, rose super essence and jasmine absolute. Before fading away entirely, Replica Bubble Bath leaves behind a refreshing blend of white musk, patchouli and coconut milk to mimic the warmth of steam and skin without smelling thick or heavy.
Due to the relatively low fragrance concentration within an eau de toilette, Bubble Bath’s sillage – how long it lasts and how far it travels – is fairly short. This does not mean an eau de toilette is of a lesser quality than an eau de parfum or parfum, it is just tailored to a different situation. Bubble Bath works well for people who like to switch out their fragrance each day without the lingering scent of yesterday’s choice, for people who prefer only those close to them to be able to smell them, and for people who want to create a unique scent and add freshness to other fragrances by layering Bubble Bath atop their other fragrances.
Personally, on warmer days, I love applying a few spritzes of Bubble Bath to my wrists after a shower to lock the scent in. The crisp freshness of each spray adds a little bit of calming comfort to my often hectic mornings, and I can keep the 10ml bottle in my bag for top-ups as needed. In the evenings or on days that I don’t want to reapply my scent, I layer Bubble Bath with a stronger eau de parfum. I have found that it subdues and adds freshness to sweeter, more ambery floral scents like Maison Francis Kurkdjian’s Baccarat Rouge 540 and Tom Ford’s Lost Cherry and adds warmth to more traditional florals like Diptyque’s Do Son and Byredo’s La Tulipe.
So, for those typically without the time or facilities to luxuriate in a bubble filled tub each day, replicating the sensation of a soak only requires a few spritzes of Bubble Bath. The best part? This particular Bubble Bath can be indulged in anywhere.
Maison Margiela Bubble Bath is available in 10ml, 30ml & 100ml.
