Difference Between Perfumes and Eau the Toilette?

The key difference between perfume and eau de toilette lies in their composition. Perfumes are more concentrated fragrances and usually contain between 15% to 30% perfume oils. Perfumes are known for their more rich and more complex scents, which can last for longer hours than Eau the toilette.

Eau de toilettes are much lighter and are formulated with 5% to 15% perfume oils. Eau de toilette is also mixed with a solution of water and alcohol, which makes it easy to apply and provides a subtle fragrance that lasts for a shorter amount of time (But this also varies depending on the brand, own composition, ingredients…)

Concentration

The concentration of perfume oils in a fragrance is one of the main factors determining its longevity. As we have already mentioned, perfumes contain a high concentration of oils, which gives them a strong and long-lasting scent. Some fragrances can last up to 24 hours on the skin, making them a great choice for special occasions and events where you want to make a statement. Eau de toilette has a lower concentration of oils, which gives it a lighter and more refreshing scent. This also means that eau de toilette does not last as long on the skin as perfume, and you may need to reapply it throughout the day to maintain your favourite fragrance on the skin. However, the lighter nature of eau de toilette makes it a great choice for everyday wear, as it is not overpowering and will not be as strong as some perfumes. 

Do Eau de Toilettes or Parfums Ever Expire?

The shelf life of a fragrance depends on factors such as formulation, storage conditions, and quality of ingredients. Generally, fragrances have a shelf life of 3-5 years if stored correctly.

You may notice when your fragrance is expired that, the scent changes in texture and colour. Over time, fragrances can oxidise, the scent may become weaker or stronger than the original, or it may develop an unpleasant or different smell. Also, if the fragrance has been exposed to high temperatures or direct sunlight, it may expire more quickly than usual.

To extend the shelf life of a fragrance, it is best to store it in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and heat. 

Where Should I Spray My Perfume To Make It Last Longer?

There are a few areas on your body where you can apply perfume to make it last longer. 

  • The pulse points on your body are areas where the blood vessels are closest to the skin’s surface, and they radiate heat, which can help to activate the fragrance. We are talking about wrists inside the elbows, neck, and behind the ears.
  • Spraying perfume on your hair can help to make the fragrance last longer because the scent will be released as your hair moves. However, avoid spraying perfume directly onto your hair, as it can dry out the strands. Instead, spray the fragrance onto a hairbrush and run it through your hair.
  • Apply perfume to moisturised skin, as it will help to hold the fragrance longer. Use a fragrance-free lotion to moisturise your skin, then spray your perfume on top.
