By now, you probably have heard about the new skincare trend called “Skin Cycling”, invented by American dermatologist Dr Whitney Bowe which got 3.5 billion views on TikTok in the past few weeks. But what actually is skin cycling, and how it works?

What is skin cycling?

Dr Whitney Bows likes to maximise our skincare routine as a workout routine to actually be able to see results; her theory is based on dividing the week as simple as workout and recovery days. (Two days of workout and two days of recovering) Start with a gentle cleanser that does the job for you without stripping your skin barrier. Then the first and second night is all about exfoliation — And the third and fourth night is all about being gentle with the skin, including hydrating ingredients such as Ceramides and Hyaluronic Acid.

How to skin cycling step by step

Night 1 — Exfoliation —

  1. Let’s start your skin cycling routine by adding a gentle cleanser to get rid of any kind of impurities and leave the skin ready for the exfoliating serum. We love Fresh soy cleanser as it’s very gentle with the skin’s pH while also cleansing, softening, and hydrating all skin types.
  2. Apply an exfoliating serum such as glycolic acid on clean skin. Paula’s Choice skin-perfecting 2% BHA liquid exfoliant is a cult favourite. The exfoliant is gentle enough for beginners but powerful enough to unclog pores and smooth texture thanks to salicylic acid.
  3. Moisturise your face with a nourishing face cream on your face and neck. Vida Glow Age Defiance Hydra Memory Cream has a great formula made with hyaluronic acid as a key ingredient that hydrates, rejuvenate and soften the skin without breaking out.

Night 2 — Retinoid —

  1. Clean your face with the same cleanser you used the first night (There is no need to invest in a bunch of different cleansers, serums and creams). Just stick to one that works for you and is gentle enough to your skin barrier.
  2. Star with a pea-sized amount on clean, dry skin of your favourite retinoid. Kiehls has recently launched their Fast Release Wrinkle Reducing Serum; this hard-working retinol serum contains 0.3% pure retinol to reveal firmer and more radiant skin.
  3. Don’t forget to moisturise your skin with your favourite moisturiser. Emma Lewisham Supernatural Face Crème Riche is another fabulous option that I always recommend for those who like rich night creams. It’s packed with clean ingredients scientifically proven to regenerate collagen, enhancing skin clarity, glow and suppleness.

Night 3 And 4 — Recovery —

Then it is time for two consecutive days of recovery; as Dr Whitney Bowe recommends, you only need to cleanse and apply a nourishing moisturiser that deeply hydrates the skin. It’s all about adding ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, squalane, and ceramides. This way, the active ingredients become more effective, the skin barrier keeps balance, and achieving results is just faster as we don’t have to deal with the recovery phase. The key here is to simplify and maintain our skin barrier as healthy as possible.
